We know the holiday season can be a stressful time of year. When you reach out for support, we're here to help. Everyone needs support sometimes, and we want the experience to be as stress-free as possible. Last year, in Halifax Regional Municipality alone, almost 7,000 households reached out for a little help.

how we help

Across Nova Scotia, our member agencies work hard to provide food and gift support over the holiday season. In HRM, we operate a Christmas Registry that matches requests for support with available food and gift resources in the community.

what kind of support is available

Both food and gift support are available. The Christmas Registry is supported by over 50 community organizations. Each group decides what support they will provide, in what geographic areas, to what family types, and to what ages. Typically, applicants have the choice of a Christmas hamper (turkey or chicken with vegetables, or vegetarian option) or a take-out style, prepared dinner. Gift support is availalbe to children ages 17 years and under as of December 24, 2020. The primary caregiver should be the person to apply for gift support, as we do not have the resources to fulfil more than one request for gift support per child.

how to get help outside of HRM

If you live outside of HRM, and you have questions about finding support in your area, please call 211, or contact your local food bank. Find their details using our Find Food tool. You can also email and we will help connect you with support in your area. Deadlines to apply vary across Nova Scotia.

how to get help in HRM

There are 4 ways to apply:

  1. If you received income assistance in October 2020, the Department of Community Services mailed you a Christmas application form in mid-October. Complete this form and mail it to the address on the application as soon as possible. If you did not receive a form or you lost your form, please contact the Christmas Registry at 902-457-2849. The deadline to apply using your Department of Community Services form is November 6, 2020.
  2. You can apply for support in person at your local food bank (find it here); at Salvation Army in HRM by telephone or online (their online application goes live on October 26); or at Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank in person on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am-12pm or by calling 902-425-2125 extension 200. At Parker Street or your local food bank you will be asked to fill out an application form. Please have with you ID for yourself and everyone else in your household, plus proof of address for Parker Street. The deadline to apply through a food bank is November 10, 2020. To ask about availability through Salvation Army and Park Street Food and Furniture Bank, please contact them directly.
  3. You can apply for support with the online form at the bottom of the page. If you need a printed copy of the application, you can get one here.
  4. Or you can apply by calling the Christmas Registry at 902-457-2849.


how will i know if I'm being supported

If you applied at Salvation Army they will let you know where and when to pick up your support. If you applied at Parker Street they will let you know when you will receive your support. If you applied through a food bank, Department of Community Services, or online, someone will call you by early December to let you know where and when to pick up your support.

how to make a change to an existing application

If you have a change of address, phone number, or need to make a change to your family information after you've already submitted your application, please email you changes to or call 902-457-2849. You can leave a message and someone will get back to you.
