GLACE BAY, N.S. — Extra help is being offered to the Glace Bay Food Bank for its annual fall drive and it comes in the form of wheels and steel.

Blair’s Used Furniture is donating three cube vans and drivers to help collect donations during the annual food drive on Sept. 29. One will go around with volunteers who will canvass door to door in seven communities, collecting non-perishable food. The other two will be parked outside Sobeys and Superstore, both on Reserve Street in Glace Bay.

“It’s something we’ve never done before,” said David MacKeigan, food bank spokesman.

“Now people who aren’t home can still make donations at the grocery stores.”

It was store owner Blair Slade who offered the help after last year’s fall food drive, which MacKeigan calls the most important drive of the year for the organization.

Slade, who has owned his own business for 10 years, is happy to help out and plans to be a part of all future Glace Bay Food Bank drives.

“I’ve driven by them, out doing their collecting and I always thought about how hard it must be,” he said.

“I have the three cube vans, so I told Dave we could use these, and instead of 30 trips make it one.”

Helping collect food door to door again are the 9th Glace Bay Girl Guides, who last year even helped wash walls at the food bank after the canvassing was over.

“We try to teach the girls to get engaged in community issues and to help when you can,” said guide leader Nicole Skalaa, who is also coastal district commissioner for Glace Bay.

“A big part of the Girl Guide program is volunteering and community service projects.”

MacKeigan said they are trying to fill the shelves to get through the year. Although they aren’t in need of cereal or school snacks, they need any kind of canned goods. He said canned soups, vegetables and beans are popular with clients, as well as canned or powdered milk, pasta and sauces.

The Glace Bay Food Bank could also use more volunteers to help with their annual food drive. For more information, call 902-849-0750.
