Hunger in Nova Scotia - based on data collected in March 2009:

Approximately 20,344 individuals are assisted by food banks monthly (an increase of 20% over 2008)

 

·

 

An additional 94,000 meals are served monthly at soup kitchens and meal programs

 

·

 

 

Through food banks and meal programs combined, approximately 40,000 people are assisted each month

 

·

 

34% of those assisted are children and youth (under 18 years of age); furthermore, 44% of households accessing food banks have at least one child

 

·

 

7% of those assisted are seniors aged 65 + (an increase of 3% over 2008)

 

·

 

Food bank use is almost evenly split between men and women

 

·

 

 

FEED NOVA SCOTIA’s network includes 153 member agency food banks, shelters and emergency food assistance programs across the province

 

·

 

35% of food banks service rural clients while 65% are in urban centres
